LASIK

LASIK is a vision correction procedure to treat nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. LASIK uses advanced lasers to reshape the cornea, reducing or eliminating the need for glasses and contact lenses.

Imagine Ditching Your Glasses…

Why LASIK?

You put up with wearing eyeglasses and contact lenses, but it’s annoying. Yearly prescription costs, foggy glasses, irritated eyes, having to constantly order more lenses…

Not to mention that your poor vision affects your life in a thousand different ways. From not being able to read your alarm clock to struggling with swimming or never being able to see in the shower, you know things could be easier.

You’d like to live your life without having to wear glasses permanently. Without worrying about falling asleep in your contacts. Without having to clean your lenses each day.

And you’d love to be able to watch your kids play soccer with ease. To look up and be able to see the leaves on the trees. To go on vacation and really, truly enjoy the view.

LASIK surgery can help you get those things. It’s the most common form of laser eye surgery in North America, is performed without any blades, and takes less than 15 minutes to correct the vision in both eyes.

For patients suffering from nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, LASIK is often the best option to restore their eyesight health.

Most patients return to work and their normal daily activities after a 24-hour recovery period. And the day after their surgery, they’re usually amazed to see the world around them more clearly than they have done in years!

How Exactly Does LASIK Work?

LASIK stands for “laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis”, and it works by slightly changing the shape of your eye’s cornea according to your individual vision correction needs.

During surgery, a tiny flap is created to expose your cornea, and a computer-controlled laser emits cool pulses of ultraviolet light to reshape your cornea. After your procedure when light hits your eye, your cornea will properly project light onto your retina so you are able to see images clearly.

Both eyes can be corrected in the same appointment, discomfort is minimal, and numbing eye drops ensure that you don’t experience pain. The next day, your vision should be significantly improved!

Am I a good candidate?

LASIK is typically recommended for patients 18-60 years of age, who aren’t pregnant or nursing, who’ve had stable eyesight for at least one year, who have generally healthy eyes, and who are in good overall health.

In addition, your cornea must have sufficient thickness to perform the procedure and you should not continuously suffer from dry eyes. All this can be evaluated in consultation with one of our experienced optometrists.

Is there an alternative to LASIK if it’s not right for my eyes?

PRK Laser Eye Surgery (Photorefractive Keratectomy) is an alternative to LASIK, which is usually recommended when the patient’s cornea is too thin for LASIK surgery.

It treats the cornea slightly differently, by first gently wiping a thin layer of tissue on the surface of the cornea from the eye. The laser is then used to reshape the cornea, just the same as in LASIK surgery. Once the cornea is reshaped, a contact lens bandage is worn for a few days to allow for the corneal surface cells to regenerate.
