Alexander Chang, MD

Alexander Chang, M.D. has been practicing in the South Hills area for over 30 years. He earned his Bachelor’s degree at Case Western Reserve University in 1972, majoring in Chemistry graduating Phi Beta Kappa. He also earned his medical degree at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 1976 and completed his internship there.

Dr. Chang completed his ophthalmology training at the University of Pittsburgh and has been practicing ophthalmology in Pittsburgh ever since. In 1990, he founded Chang Eye Group.

Dr. Chang is a highly respected and leading cataract surgeon in the tri-state area and has performed well over 20,000 cataract surgeries. He also provides medical eye care for patients with glaucoma, diabetes, and macular degeneration.

Dr. Chang is affiliated with St. Clair Memorial Hospital. Because Dr. Chang’s practice is privately owned, he is able to accept insurance from both Highmark and UPMC.

Joseph Scherer, MD

Joseph Scherer M.D. is a Board Certified Ophthalmologist who has been practicing in the South Hills for over 20 years. Dr. Scherer received his undergraduate degree at the State University of New York at Geneseo and his medical degree at Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John’s.

He completed his internship at Yale New Haven Hospital, St. Raphael Campus, and his ophthalmology residency at the University of Pittsburgh Eye & Ear Institute.

Dr. Scherer specializes in advanced small incision cataract surgery, utilizing premium lens implant technologies. He provides comprehensive eye care including glaucoma treatment and laser, diabetic eye care, and other problems of the aging eye including macular degeneration.

He is a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Scherer has published papers in the American Journal of Ophthalmology and Current Concepts in Ophthalmology. He has served as a surgical teacher for the University of Pittsburgh ophthalmology resident training program for over 20 years.

Dr. Scherer is honored to have participated in surgical ophthalmology mission work in Honduras.

Rose Ngan, MD

Rose Ngan, M.D., earned her Bachelor’s degree at the University of Michigan in 2001 and her Medical degree from the University of Washington Medical School in 2006. She completed ophthalmology training at the University of Rochester Medical School. Dr. Ngan has received a number of academic honors and has served as a medical researcher at both University of Washington and University of Michigan.

She has been listed as an author of research papers published in prestigious journals such as The American Journal of Ophthalmology and the Journal of Investigative Medicine. Dr. Ngan has received awards for her professional presentations. She has been a literacy volunteer and an English teacher in the Global Service Corps.

Dr. Ngan provides medical eye care for patients with glaucoma, diabetes, and macular degeneration.

Michael Alunni, MD

Michael Alunni, M.D. graduated with honors from Jefferson Medical College Of Thomas Jefferson University in 2005. He received his medical degree from Sidney Kimmel Medical College. His residency was completed at UPMC Eye Center and achieved his fellowship graduation from Allegheny Ophthalmic and Orbital Associates.

Dr. Alunni is a member of the American Board of Ophthalmology.

Having more than 13 years of diverse experience, especially in ophthalmology, glaucoma, and cataracts, Dr. Michael A Alunni affiliates with many hospitals, including Allegheny General Hospital, St Clair Hospital, and UPMC Passavant.

Michael Lewen, MD

Michael Lewen, MD specializes in the medical and surgical management of conditions affecting the retina and vitreous. His areas of expertise include macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, retinal vascular disease, macular holes, epiretinal membranes, retinal detachment, and complex intraocular lens surgery.

Dr. Lewen attended Williams College, where he completed a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy. He earned his medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society.

Dr. Lewen completed his Internal Medicine internship at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia, PA, and his ophthalmology residency at the New England Eye Center at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, MA. He went on to complete his fellowship training in vitreoretinal surgery at Lahey Medical Center and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA.

Dr. Lewen is a board-certified ophthalmologist and a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Retinal Specialists. He is affiliated with the ophthalmology department at Allegheny General Hospital.

Dr. Lewen is a Pittsburgh native, and when he is not caring for patients he enjoys spending time with his wife and their dog.

Paula Sandoe, Au.D.

Paula Sandoe, Au.D., has been practicing audiology for over 20 years. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree at West Virginia University in 1998 majoring in Speech Pathology and Audiology. She also earned her Master’s Degree at West Virginia University in 2000. Dr. Sandoe completed her Doctorate of Audiology in 2006 at A.T. Still University.

Michele Schraeder, OD

Michele Schraeder, O.D., earned her Bachelor’s degree at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania and earned her Doctor of Optometry degree at Pennsylvania College of Optometry. She has been with the Chang Eye Group since completing her optometry training in 1997.

Dr. Schraeder is a member of the American Optometric Association, the Western Pennsylvania Optometric Association, and is certified by the National Board of Contact Lens Examiners.

As a Dry Eye Institute graduate, Dr. Schraeder studied the development of equipment and protocols that help the underlying causes of dry eye and ocular surface diseases. She is dedicated to educating each patient on dry eye disease, the causes as well as the best treatment to help improve symptoms and create successful outcomes.

As a contact lens specialist, Dr. Schraeder often fits specialized contact lenses that correct astigmatism or both near and far vision (multifocal). Dr. Schraeder provides pre-op and post-op care to patients who choose to undergo LASIK. She also provides primary eye care to patients of all ages.

Ryan McBee, OD

Ryan McBee, O.D., grew up in California spending most of that time just outside of San Francisco. He completed his undergraduate education at Whitman College with a Degree in Biology. He graduated from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in the top five percent of his class obtaining honors in both the clinical and applied science. He comes to Chang Eye Group after spending the last twelve years in a medical/surgical practice with a focus on glaucoma as well as general medical optometry. Prior to that, he was part owner of a private practice in Reno/Lake Tahoe.

Dr. McBee practices primary care optometry with a special interest in ocular disease management, emergency care, and pre/post surgical care. He is a member of the American Optometric Association and the Pennsylvania Optometric Association.

Dr. McBee lives in the South Hills with his wife and two cats (one of whom is being treated for glaucoma).
